You're looking at the next generation of multi-tool. Leatherman's latest 'Tell us what you want, what you really, really want!' user survey found that walkers don't wish to be weighed down with the equivalent of a DIY fiend's toolkit in their pocket on a one-day walk. They didn't need the extensive tent, stove or bike maintenance features that make Leatherman's best-selling multi-tool, the Wave, such a popular backpacking gizmo: they wanted to keep weight and volume to a minimum. Cue the 142g Skeletool.
After four years of crinkly browed research and development, Leatherman has spawned a bare-bones construction based around their traditional, sturdy pliers and wire cutter design. By building on only what they consider the essential features for one day in the hills, the Skeletool beats the Wave on weight by 100g. Close the tool and some nifty fingerwork reveals a single blade knife, a choice of four screwdriver bits and the hill-walking essential - the beer bottle opener.
